Approved, Not Approved was made by Dame Products and Unbound, in partnership with one, inc. to help you understand how advertising guidelines might disservice your needs.
By selectively enforcing guidelines, platforms limit your access to solutions, education, and engagement from brands that are trying to make the world a better place for you.
After our experiences with the MTA through the second half of 2018, we’ve decided to file a complaint (aka, sue them!) to fight for your right to be exposed to wellness tools that can change your life for the better!
We believe that advertisers should allow advertisements for sexual health and wellness products for everyone — not exclusively cis-men, as is currently the case.
We assert the following truths:
- Sexual wellness solutions address life-altering problems such as pain during sex (experienced by 75% of women), libido- and arousal-related difficulties, genito-pelvic pain penetration disorder, provoked vestibulodynia, and vulvodynia;
- 53% of American women use vibrators to support sexual function, improving the experience across almost every measure (e.g. desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, pain, overall function), with nearly zero associated with side effects;
- The current advertising landscape privileges the experiences and problems of cis-men for reasons that are neither clear nor consistent (eg. ED medications);
- This inequality further handicaps vulva-havers, who already grapple with higher medical costs and a poor scientific understanding of their reproductive and sexual health;
- According to the WHO and CDC, there is no clear or meaningful distinction between sexual health and sexual pleasure. Healthy, safe sex is and should be pleasurable, and the pursuit and discussion of that pleasure is a vital component of our overall health and quality of life.
With these facts in hand, we ask:
- That, when applicable, advertisers offer an ad category for “sexual health and wellness,” shown only to those 18+;
- That advertisers treat sexual wellness solutions for all sexes and genders equally in how they approve or deny advertisements, whether they are ED medications, vibrators, lubricants, condoms, dildos, dilators, or books, as examples.
